Prevalence of Hearing Loss

Hearing Loss has been found to be one of the top four chronic conditions found in the elderly population (NCHS, 1984). Someone who has hearing loss faces problems communicating in their day-to-day life. Most hearing problems occur gradually so the signs are difficult to notice. About 28 million people in the U.S. have some degree of reduced hearing sensitivity and of this number, 80% have irreversible hearing loss (NIDCD, 1989).
