INSTRUCTIONS
TO PARENTS ON THE HOME CARE OF CHILDREN WITH EAR DRAINAGE TUBES IN
PLACE
WHAT TO EXPECT:
1. The tubes generally stay in place for five to twelve months,
possibly longer.
2. The child should not experience any discomfort while the tubes
are in place.
3. There might be some colored or blood-tinged discharge from the
affected ear for up to a week.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Do not try to remove the tubes.
2. Do not allow water to get in your childs ear, as this may
cause infection. Cotton with vaseline or ear molds should be used to
keep water out of the ears when bathing or swimming.
3. Clean only the outer part of the ear. Wipe drainage away with
a cotton swab.
4. Before allowing your child to swim, check with your physician.
Ear molds are advised for swimming.
5. When calling to schedule the postoperative exam with your
physician, please schedule a follow-up hearing test as well.
