Water Protection/Swim Molds

WATER PROTECTION (SWIM MOLD) INFORMATION SHEET

This information sheet was designed for our patients who need to keep water out of their ears for a variety of reasons, such as PE tubes or perforations of the eardrum.

Children or adults who have had PE tubes inserted need to keep their ears dry as long as the tubes are in place because the presence of the tube creates an opening in the eardrum. If the water, especially lake or ocean water, enters the middle ear space through the tube opening, a middle ear infection could occur.

Water can be kept out of the ears by several methods, such as a cotton ball and Vaseline, a shower cap, commercial ear plugs purchased at a pharmacy, or custom-made swim molds.

The advantages of custom molds are:

1. They are made to fit the exact contours of the ear and provide a good water-tight seal because they are retained in the ear canal better than any other method.

2. They can be reused again and again, and can be kept sanitary by washing with soap and water.

3.The swim molds that we use come in a variety of bright colors, and they float, which reduces the risk of loss.

4. The manufacturer provides a warranty of one year against defects in workmanship, and a three month warranty against problems with fit.

5.The swim molds are made of a soft vinyl material which is very comfortable in the ear.

6. Adults can use their molds for an indefinite amount of time, but children need to have the fit checked annually.

Once impressions are taken, it takes about two weeks for the swim molds to return. You may schedule an appointment for this with the audiologist at either of our offices.
